Welcome to CFERN

The Chinese Forest Ecosystem Research Network (CFERN) is a long temporal and broad spatial scales ecology research network directly constructed and managed by Department of Science and Technology State Forestry Administration, P.R.China. it constituted of 15sites which represent diverse ecosystems and research emphases, including 5 state sites. The Network Office coordinates communication, network publications, and research-planning activities.

The network contains many features including an advanced query system, a new set of core monitoring indicators and access to monitoring data catalogues. Each of the 15 sites works as part of the Network sharing expertise, data and a common mission. It promotes synthesis and comparative research across sites and ecosystems and among other related national and international research programs.

objectives

·to promote interdisciplinarity and integrate cooperation
·to enhance communication between the network members
·to carry out long-term terrestrial monitoring and research activities
·to provide a basis for linking different satellite remote sensing systems
·to provide a basis for the scientific community and policy-makers through giving and getting information
·to Collaborate and share data and information between the network members in order to increase the efficiency of research and the understanding of forest ecosystems

The mission of the CFERN

  · studying on structure and function of forest ecosystems in China
· Understanding ecological phenomena and character of forest ecosystem over long temporal and large spatial scales
· Creating database of forest resource ,ecological environment, water resource on area or state level
· Establishing assessment and monitoring system of ecological effects on forests in core sites
· Providing information for the identification and solution of ecological problems
· Setting up dynamic monitoring net and warning system of forest ecological environment
· monitoring the long-term response of forest ecosystems to the most relevant stress factors by analyzing data from a network of selected study sites,

The core research areas of 21st century

·impacts of forest vegetation on area water resource and ecohydrological effects
·estimating forest carbon storage and studying forest effect mechanism on carbon balance
estimating the storage of the forest biomass carbon-base and the forest soil carbon-base
estimating the change of the forest biomass carbon-base and the forest soil carbon-base
·Establishing assessment and monitoring system of ecological effects on forests in core watershed ( the Yellow river, the Changjiang river) and retrograde ecosystem
·Modeling laws of material and energy transportation change of soil-vegetation-atmosphere system on the different scales
